Suraxani 2019 // Maritime and Shipping Experience
From Oil Tanker to Experiential Journey
As part of extensive celebrations of their 160th anniversary the Azerbaijan Caspian Shipping Company decided to make a significant gift to the city and its communities: the first ship museum in the Caspian Sea. The museum is designed to attract all age groups, from 5 to 95. It also aims to contribute to the government goal of expanding tourism destinations and attractions for Baku, and bring new revenue to the city and its people. The Suraxani Oil Tanker Museum and Visitor Centre Experience is permanently moored at the historic Baku Boulevard.
The aim was to create a place, a journey and a narrative which portrays a historic and current outline of the shipping industry, from mainly an Azeri point of view.‘The target audience is wide, not only in age but also in demographics - from school kids to engineers. We needed to create a great experience for all of them, so we developed parallel narratives throughout the visitor journey.’ To achieve this goal our Amsterdam design team created a complete project plan and realisation covering narrative, content development and design.
Our team worked creating 1800 m2 of narrative designs, from traditional exhibits to interactive and immersive media experiences, to be implemented in this redundant but now fully restored Oil Tanker. The hulls of the ship were ideal to build the immersive experiences since we were fully in control of the lighting situation.
